A Statement of Belief

"The future of our Missions...from an ancient Faith."

We believe that God is calling us to be a liturgically contemporary & theologically progressive Missionary group rooted in the historic and venerable Anglican Christian faith tradition.  The Anglican tradition came down to us from that Early Church founded by Christ Jesus and His Holy Apostles, growing into the historic and early undivided Church, spreadiing into Europe...and eventually becoming the Anglican via media and from thence into the modern, contemporary, yet historical Methodist and Episcopal faith traditions.  As such, the episcopate rejoices in its documented Anglican Succession, as well as the Anglican faith of the Wesleys...Given this historical glimpse, the Missions are committed to the recognition of one Church and Body of Christ, sadly divided by the faithful over the years, yet to become that one Body that demonstrates true community, deep Christian spirituality and a passion for social justice.  Our beliefs are a living reflection of the nature and call of God as interpreted within the richness of the post-denominational culture in which we live.

In that spirit, we offer this "Statement of Belief" as one of many possible post-denominational reflections of what it means to be a part of the autocephalous Free Episcopal Missions and Order of Servant Franciscans.  A more historic and formal expression of our faith may be seen in the 39 Articles of Religion as found in the Anglican and Episcopal Book of Common Prayer.

1.  We trust in the One Living God, present in all reality, known by many Names - the source of all creation and creativity.  We experience this Creator-God in a way that transcends hate, injustice, conflict, sickness and death.  We recognize the True Presence and work of the Living God in all religions of love, and rejoice in the love that is expressed by every religion of peace.

2.  We accept that Jesus is the Christ, the Child of the Living God and the manifestation of God's grace through: healing, reconciliation, transformation, peace, love, and justice.  We strive to see this Christ in all of God's children, through all time, in all faith groups, and in all religions.

3.  We experience the presence of the Holy Spirit, as the dynamic action of the Living God, present in all of life and freely offering love, justice, peace, healing and life more abundantly to everyone.

4.  We acknowledge that the Living God can be revealed through canonical...and non-canonical writings...God is also manifest in apostolic traditon, human reason, life experience, nature, music, art, and in other divers forms of creative expression.  The various translations of the Sacred Scriptures are acceptable for use within the Missions...

5.  We affirm that the spiritual experience of a life of prayer, worship and spiritual nurture, of communion with God, and the eternal family of God, is central to becoming and sustaining the Commonwealth (kingdom) of God in the here and now.  Furthermore, we share in the historic Apostolic Tradition of preserving the best aspects of Christian wisdom and practice throughout our spiritual formation.

6.  We believe that everyone is called by God to gather together as a faith community: the One True Church, undivided by time, human boundaries, doctrines, organizational schemes, prejudices, languages and cultures.  Each faith community is to share in the creation of God's Commonwealth in their own time, place and space.  This community, in Christian Tradition, is also referred to as the Body of Christ, the collective presence of the living, resurrected Christ in each of us and in the world.  Just as there is only One Body of Christ, so too is there but one true church - though outwardly divided by men, doctrine, and misunderstandings.

7.  We celebrate the Grace of the Sacraments, the visible, yet non-verbal signs of God's blessings of birth, rebirth, of joining in love, of reconciliation, of health and healing, of loving service, of transformation from death to life eternal, and all expressions of the presence and action of God in life, and commit that they should freely and without qualification be made available to everyone.  The sacraments belong to God, and therefore, to all God's children.  Our role is to actually go into the highways and hedges, and bring all the divers peoples of the world, to the table of the Lord.  Our primary sacramental text is the Anglican-Episcopal Book of Common Prayer, as well as other historic Christian Prayer and Service Books.

8.  We thank God for giving all people the grace of the priesthood, and in empowering each person with the ability to participate in becoming God's child, to directly experience God's reconciliation, love, and justice, without any human intermediary or impediment.  All Christians are called into the apostolate of healing, reconciliation, justice, worship and witness to the Good News of Christ.

9.  We recognize the four orders of the Priesthood:  laity, deacons, presbyters and bishops; all working together to manifest the Kingdom of God.  We affirm the equality of every person in life, faith, sacrament and service, regardless of ability, gender, appearance, culture, race, ethnicity, vocation or theological opinion.  All Missions members are thus qualified to present themselves to the Universal Church for consideration for Holy Orders.  Ordained clergy within the FME-Missions and the OSF enjoy the grace of Christ Himself passed to them through Unbroken Apostolic Succession.  The FME-Missions and the OSF believe in the calling-out and ordination of particular people for service and leadership, for teaching and proclamation, for healing and justice, for missions and the ministry of sacraments.

10.  We celebrate the eternal Cloud of Witnesses to the grace of God and the power of faith.  These eternally living witnesses include Mary - Theotokos - the Mother of Jesus, and all the Holy Ones and Saints of the Universal Church as well as all God's people throughout all ages and religions; and for us especially, Saints Francis and Clare.

11.  We know that True Faith is simply trust in the reality of the living, loving God active in the world and experinced throughout human history in many manifestations, and that it is not merely ritual or intellectual acceptance of any particular creed, formula, dogma, or theology.  Faith is living and active, and deeply personal, demanding our full participation and cooperation.  This is "saving faith," apart from all works of creedal confession or of contrition, for the Love and Grace of God are freely given to all through Christ, irregardless of any form or fashion of work.

12.  Above all, we understand that the essence of God's Religion of Faith is: "Love God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind," and "Love your neighbor as yourself."  All aspects of faith and religion, above and beyond these, are negotiable and changing works of man.

Who are we?

The Free Episcopal Church - USA is an ecumenical and progressive missionary group within today's Post-Denominational Church Movement.

The members Free Episcopal Church - USA (for short) provide a variety of community-based Chaplain & Franciscan ministries throughout the United States, as well as other missionary endeavors outside the continental U.S. such as the ongoing sponorship of a children's orphanage and school in Panama, and the assistance to the Anglican Bishop of Nazareth, Bishop +Riah, in developing a multi-faith educational center to promote peace in the northern region of Israel.

Worship Opportunities... the presbyters and chaplains of the FEC are predominately involved in ministry outside the traditional parish - in the highways of life - those places that have traditionally been neglected and under-served
.

Your Ministry Opportunities...

We are also currently poised to help highly qualified and motivated individuals to serve in chaplain positions throughout the United States -contact us for details!

Chaplains are typically required to have regionally accredited graduate degrees in theology (72 semester hours or more) as well as ministerial experience and other requirements.

The appropriate degree for Military and VA ministry is the 90 semester hour Master of Divinity degree from a Regionally Accredited, ATS or TRACS seminary, as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. The Military has, in some cases, made exceptions to these requirements based on their "equivalency" process.

YES! You can help! If you would like to help support our missionary and chaplaincy ministries, please write and let us know! We are in need of modern translation Bibles, daily devotionals for teens, adults & families, worship music CD's, rosaries, and other devotional items. We are also accepting pre-paid food cards for eating establishments and grocery stores to provide to the homeless and less fortunate. Any donation may be mailed directly to the address below. More about the FCE...

Our Mission is to provide a spiritually focused, culturally relevant, and genuinely sacramental ministry to all of God's children - from a blended faith tradition. We heartily recognize and celebrate our historic Anglican heritage as we seek to minister in a post-denominational world!

Why "Free"?

We follow the "Free Church" model of government, liturgy, worship, and sacrament. As a Free Church, we are not under the jurisdiction of any of the historic institutions. Rather, we are under the jurisdiction of the Holy Spirit, administered by bona fide apostolic succession, as both the New Testament and the witness of Early Church History prescribe. We have also chosen to designate our Missionary work as "Free" in order to better emulate the freedom of the Holy Spirit to move and operate in our progressive and post-denominational culture. John 3:8; Luke 4:18; Romans 8:21; II Corinthians 3:17
*
We do, however, stand united with the more traditional Anglican, Methodist, Episcopal, and Franciscan bodies in Christian unity through our membership in the International Council of Community Churches (and thus, Churches Uniting in Christ, and the World and National Council of Churches) as well as Franciscans International. Ephesians 4:5; Mark 9:38-41
*
The FCE typically use standard (though slightly modified) books of prayer and worship, alongside various contemporary translations of the sacred scriptures (such as the NLT, HCSB, ESV, etc.). Worship and service, however, are not limited to prayer books, as these helpful texts guide us to do what we may very well do spontaneously and as led by the Holy Spirit! Our focus is upon the freedom of the Holy Spirit to move in our midst within a liturgical context - just as the early faithful worshiped! Daniel 7:9-14; John 21:25; 2 Timothy 4:13; Revelation 22:9; Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16; I Corinthians 14:26; and James 5:13

Why "Methodist"?

The members and supporters of the Missions do not follow a man. We follow the Lord Jesus Christ. However, in the light of Christ, we regognize the dynamic impact that the Holy Spirit had not only on the formative church in the book of Acts, but also upon the Wesley brothers as they sought to incorporate a vibrant spirituality to their experience of the Anglican-Catholic Church of England so long ago. That early mission comprised the goal of establishing a fresh and dynamic Methodist-Episcopal Church - or Mission - to the then newly forming United States! Acts 1:14; 2:1-4, 32, 42-47
*
We invite that same Holy Spirit to transform us, and our world, on a daily basis. Sometimes, this is accomplished through dynamic prayer and intercession, through powerful praise and worship, or through robust and relevant preaching. For some, this may follow a Franciscan-oriented spiritual path, for others, perhaps a contemplative Benedictine practice, and for others still, through a progressive and very contemporary Episcopal or Methodist expression. Romans 6:22; 12:2, IICorinthians 3:18
*
Historic Methodist theology (such as the contemporary systematic theology of Thomas C. Oden) can also provide a bridge between the traditional Anglican-Catholic faith and Reformed Protestant theology; for us, this results in a blending of both worlds. L. Gregory Jones, in his text: Embodying Forgiveness: A Theological Analysis (1995) said it well when he remarked that "...a feature of Weslyan theology...at its best...draws on features of the other major Christian traditions: Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Reformed, Anabaptist and Anglican. But an ecumenical focus is not the only characteristicture of Weslyan theology; another is a concern for holiness, understood both in personal and more broadly social and political terms." From this perspective, then, one can readily discern a wonderful blending of ecumenical catholic and Franciscan perspectives of faith and practice as espoused by the Free Methodist-Episcopal Missions. ICorinthians 12:31; Jeremiah 6:16

Why "Episcopal"?

Our Apostolic heritage from the more traditional church bodies brings with it a firm respect for and participation in the Apostolic office, witness, and sacramental ministries. Hence, our bishops and priests minister in full Apostolic Succession, primarily from Anglican, Orthodox, Eastern, and Roman Catholic roots. Acts 2:42; Ephesians 4:11-16
*
Without the spiritual guidance of consecrated episcopal oversight and witness, we would be lost in the sea of divisiveness which currently plagues the church catholic. Hence we endorse the ancient Christian motto: unitas, libertas, & caritas (in all things, practice: unity, liberty, and love). Ephesians 4:14; Galatians 5:1; II Corinthians 3:17
*
Our Servant-Bishop admonishes us to serve all of God's children without prejudice, regardless of faith persuasion or affiliation. Therefore, we strive to both minister within, and recognize the unity of, the entire and historic "One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church of Christ." Matthew 10:8; Ephesians 4:5; Mark 9:38-41
*
Following the spirit the catholic Christian faith as espoused by Wesley brothers, we offer the full seven (7) historic sacraments to all of God's creatures, without distinction or prejudice. It should be noted, however, that the canons of the Missions define marriage as a sacramental, and not a sacrament, per se.

Why "Missions"?

The term Missions is indicative of both our zeal and our vision. John 2:17; II Corinthians 7:11; Proverbs 29:18
*
The world is full of churches and denominations, abundant on virtually every street-corner of society. What we do not have, is an abundance of missionaries outside the walls of our churches, ministering to the people that have not yet found a church home. Therefore, our mission is not to build our own churches, rather, it is to become living missionaries of the living Christ, in places where traditional churches have been unable to reach. In this way, we often support the local church community by encouraging individuals and families to return to their local faith groups. Acts 10:34-43; 16:6-10; Romans 15:20

Let Us Pray:

In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit:

Lord Christ, who dost dwell in the hearts of all men and hast commanded us to love one another, grant unto us grace seriously to lay to heart the unhappy divisions of those who confess their faith in Thee.  Help us lay aside all narrowness and prejudice, all pride and hardness of heart, all that may hinder us from the understanding of our brethren:  that we may live in the spirit of unity and concord, and through the diversity of our several gifts may glorify Thy Holy Name.

Amen!
